The Nature of Still's Disease

چکیده
The following case of Still's disease is reported because of the unusually full pathological data that were available and because of the light these throw on the nature of the disease. Still's disease is defined clinically as a form of chronic arthritis with swelling of the lymph glands and spleen. The swellings of the joints and lymph glands are usually multiple and symmetrical. The disease generally starts before the second dentition (Still, 1897; Simonetti, 1930) but sometimes occurs in adults (Strauss, 1926; Micheli and Gamna, 1928). The onset is usually insidious but sometimes acute and often accompanied by fever. The course is chronic; intermissions of fever may be associated with regression of the swellings of the joints, glands and spleen but both fever and the other changes often recur (Still, 1897; Simonetti, 1930; Bini, 1935). To the three cardinal signs may be added, in order of frequency: anaemia, muscular atrophy, cachexia, pericarditis, pleurisy, exophthalmos (Bini, 1935) and exanthemata (Simonetti, 1930).

Amyloidosis in Still's disease.
Still (1897) first described the form of chronic polyarthritis of childhood now associated with his name, and six years later Whitman (1903) described two such cases complicated by amyloidosis, but since then few cases with peost-mortemn findings have been reported. Portis (1938) gave the findings in two fatal cases of Still's disease with amyloidosis, and was able to find five further cases am...
متن کاملMacrophage Activation Syndrome Associated with Adult-Onset Still's Disease Successfully Treated with Anakinra
Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a potentially fatal complication of Adult-Onset Still's disease (Still's disease). Whereas an increasing body of evidence supports interleukin-1 (IL-1) blockade as a promising treatment for Still's disease, whether it is therapeutic for MAS associated with Still's disease remains unclear. We report a 34-year-old Caucasian man with one-decade history of TN...
متن کاملComparison of long term evolution of adult onset and juvenile onset Still's disease, both followed up for more than 10 years.
Still's disease is a clinical entity of unknown origin, which can appear before 15 years of age (juvenile onset Still's disease) or later (adult onset Still's disease). There are few reported data about the long term prognosis of Still's disease and no study compares the long term evolution of adult onset and juvenile onset Still's disease. Eighteen patients fulfilling the American Rheumatism A...
متن کاملPersistent pruritic papules and plaques: a characteristic histopathologic presentation seen in a subset of patients with adult-onset and juvenile Still's disease.
BACKGROUND 'Persistent pruritic papules and plaques' of Still's disease represents a recently described eruption seen in a subset of patients. Most cases reported in the literature to date have been associated with adult-onset Still's disease. METHODS We present the clinical and histopathologic examinations of three female patients ranging in age from 15 to 54 years. RESULTS Our three patie...
متن کاملAdult Still's disease with myocarditis and peritonitis.
A 26-year-old woman had myocarditis and peritonitis during an acute multisystem attack of Still's disease. To our knowledge, these complications are rare manifestations of adult Still's disease. Treatment with high-dose adrenocorticosteroids was rapidly successful in controlling these manifestations.
